This session is to provide a venue for sharing state-of-the-art knowledge on the theory and application of nature-based solutions (NBS) to urban problems characteristic of the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene represents an age of compounded challenges of global urban growth and climate change that threaten the earth system’s sustainability. Cities need solutions that are affordable and effective in delivering services, including protection from extreme events, while at the same time addressing equity and providing synergistic benefits to well-being. NBS are increasingly being implemented in cities to improve urban resilience to complex challenges, yet there has been little synthesis across diverse contexts. We will hear global researchers and practitioners share their experience and knowledge on NBS facing urban challenges. Inspire talks highlighted in this session will include the introduction of a new global knowledge sharing network on NBS, NATURA, the role of NBS in promoting urban resilience, recent advancement in quantitative modeling of NBS performance, and emerging equity issues in NBS implementation among others. The ideas shared in this session will facilitate the international collaboration on advancing the theory and application of NBS by exchanging knowledge and synthesizing best practices across diverse global socio-cultural, ecological-biophysical, and technological-infrastructural contexts.
