Members of the Ecological Society of America have long pursued research that advances knowledge about soil nutrient management, plant-insect interactions, crop responses to environmental conditions, and other dynamics in agroecosystems. Agroecology Section members in particular are interested in elevating the impact of such research by engaging directly with communities that are most concerned in practice with these topics: farmers. For this workshop at the 2020 Annual Meeting, we invite a panel of speakers that work directly with farmers to discuss (1) how they use ecological data in practice, (2) methods of data interpretation for practitioners, (3) challenges in communicating across diverse stakeholder groups, and (4) opportunities for advancing the impact of ecological science in agricultural practices. Panel members will represent agroecology in small-scale farming, commercial farming, and indigenous communities with traditional ecological knowledge. The workshop will begin with brief introductions to each of the panel members, continue with a moderated discussion, and then the audience will have an opportunity to participate in a breakout group discussion with one of the panel members. Outcomes of the workshop will be used to design panel discussions at future meetings as part of the long range planning of the Agroecology Section; the series of panel discussions that incorporate member feedback are intended to generate continuity in member engagement from year to year. Themes and panelists for this workshop represent suggestions made by ESA members that answered a questionnaire at events sponsored by the Agroecology Section during the 2019 Annual Meeting.
