Many ecologists consider public engagement and science communication as central to their work. However, efforts to engage the public(s) with science are sometimes not well supported or valued by academic institutions. Individuals have implemented various methods to change the valuation and support for community engagement with science at the institutional level, through their home universities, professional societies, or funding agencies. This session provides an opportunity for participants to learn about past and ongoing efforts to effect institutional change around community engagement with science. Speakers will share novel approaches to institutional change around community engagement, challenges towards implementation, successes, and reflections on the process. The discussion following the Inspire session will focus on how participants may be able to adopt such changes at their home institutions and societies, including how they can support ESA’s ongoing efforts to support community engagement with science.
