INS 6 Abstract - Interdisciplinary approaches to data science education

Sarah Supp, Data Analytics, Denison University, Granville, OH
Ecology is an increasingly interdisciplinary field of study. Classrooms can leverage interdisciplinary pedagogy and examples to broaden student connection and increase diverse engagement with the material. This talk will share examples and lessons learned from building a new interdisciplinary program for undergraduates in data analytics, and from the Biological and Environmental Data Education Network, that can be applied to spark interest and integrate data science curricula into biology classrooms. Reaching students in pre-requisite free introductory courses within a major is a critical opportunity for broadening access to technical skills, building confidence, and creating a sense of belonging within the field.
