In spite of all the “diversity” verbiage from higher education administrators, we have failed to offer a welcoming environment that acknowledges why inclusivity is essential for excellence. The culture of an institution is reflective of attitudes that are supported and communicated regularly by the leadership. This must infiltrate throughout the hierarchy of an institution. AAAS has launched a program of “Sea Change” to foster institutional reflections and policies to enhance inclusion. Our ecology community can be leaders across our institutions, using linked data science and biology education, to broaden STEM and enhance inclusion of humanities and social science.
