WK 5 - CANCELLED - The Field Experience: Exploring Issues of Culture and Inclusion in Field Settings

Sunday, August 11, 2019: 8:00 AM-11:30 AM
L011, Kentucky International Convention Center
Organizer:
Gillian Bowser
The field experience is a pivotal moment for many students in the environmental sciences. The first introduction to research, seeing and exploring organisms and ecosystem processes in place are powerful motivators for students to continue in disciplines such as ecology.  However the field experience can also be pivotal moments for harassment, discrimination, and exclusion so much so that students are discouraged from continuing in the environmental sciences.  In this workshop, we will explore issues associated with the field experience from the perspectives of faculty, station directors and others who design and implement field-based courses, REUs, or other experiences.  Using facilitated activities, this workshop will explore the culture, bias, and harassment issues in field settings.  Participants will work together with other field directors and faculty to design frameworks to address harassment and cultural bias in the field.

Registration Fee: $30
