Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (https://bernheim.org/) is one of Louisville’s premier outdoor natural destinations and one of the most pristine and healthiest forests in the country. Situated in the iconic Knobs Region just 20 miles south of Louisville, Bernheim features over 15,000 acres of mature upland oak forests dissected by clear creeks and bordered by a 600-acre arboretum laced with walking trails, beautiful gardens, and art-in-nature displays. The natural forest is home to thousands of native plants and animals, including golden and bald eagles and rare plants like Great Plains Ladie’s Tresses orchids. During this trip, we’ll explore the fire ecology and management of upland oak systems by visiting long-term research plots established by Bernheim biologists and researchers at Mississippi State University that track forest change in response to prescribed fire. We’ll also visit the Wilson Creek stream restoration project, which relocated a major creek to its original bed, creating vital wetland habitat. Finally, we’ll walk the Arboretum Gardens to learn more about the collection and see three of Thomas Dambo’s Forest Giant sculptures (https://thomasdambo.com/). Lunch will be provided by Isaac’s Café located in Bernheim’s Visitor Center, which serves items straight from Bernheim’s Edible Garden and features fresh salads, soups, and sandwiches.

Registration Fee: $105
