When students see their identity reflected in a discipline, they are more likely to feel a sense of belonging and inclusion in disciplinary settings. Because field experiences are formative experiences for students pursuing ecology, it is important to consider how these experiences are represented, including what a field ecologist looks like. Diverse representation can foster inclusion for both underrepresented and dominant culture students. What does a field ecologist look like? This talk examines this question drawing from sources that include textbooks from secondary and post-secondary sources, popular media and professional journals.
