I became passionate about science because it challenged me in ways no other subject in school did and left me eager to learn more. However, my HS teachers advised that I shouldn’t pursue a career in science because “I didn’t look like a scientist”. Nevertheless, I decided to pursue a BS in Marine Biology and, after completing my first year, I found myself in academic probation. Were my teachers right? With the help of mentors and peers, I realized that through research and outreach experiences I can break the stereotypes. Henceforth, something became clear to me: science is for everyone.
