A green alternative to street life

“Education is the great equalizer” they say, “if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime”. But if you’re like my students, you can’t swim, don’t own a fishing pole, certainly don’t have a boat and a permit and to be honest, didn’t really want to go fishing anyway. How do you teach then? How do you reach your students? How do you turn a group of high schoolers and former gang members from Chicago’s roughest neighborhoods into stewards of their environment? It starts with trust.
