Like many students of color, I grew up in a culture where children who did well in and liked science were expected to become medical doctors; a path that I knew was not for me. You are reading this abstract because I participated in SEEDS. Through SEEDS, I discovered a less trodden path which appealed to my love of and curiosity about nature—ecology. I’ll describe my participation in SEEDS as a student, alumnus and mentor, and key moments that led to my current research focus in ecology education.
