Improvements in the carbon cycle of Earth System Models are tested by comparison to observations. But not all observations are equally useful. I will discuss the strengths and weakness of observations of carbon fluxes on scales from chambers to entire regions and how we use the differences between these fluxes to our advantage in the Arctic.
