Model ensembles are routinely used in climate and weather forecasting as a way to capture and represent uncertainty in predictions and the models themselves. However, model ensembles haven't been used in the same way to represent projections of land carbon cycle dynamics. In this talk, I examine the challenges and opportunities in using an ensemble approach to better understand and quantify the sensitivity of land carbon uptake to changes in climate, atmospheric CO2 conditions, and land use history, drawing from experiences from the Multi-scale Synthesis and Model Intercomparison Project (MsTMIP).
