The challenge of designing better human-environment systems demands cross-disciplinary research, and local and international engagement. To enable coherent collaboration, human ecology works within a systems-thinking conceptual framework. A recent ANU initiative is developing a series of short self-directed learning modules that help students come to terms with the basic building blocks of systems thinking. These modules develop a powerful toolbox for individually and collectively tackling complex and ‘wicked’ problems. The modules will be online and freely open to any International teaching and research that engages with complexity.
