Deep in the Oregon Cascades, the Discovery Trail is a digitally-interpreted environmental science, arts, and humanities field trip experience for middle and high school learners. Using iPads, students are guided through ten interactive stops, which integrate place-based conservation research, scientific inquiry, interviews with scientists and artists, storytelling, personal reflection, forest observation, and creative activities. The digital format provides a wide story of place by sharing images of record floods, videos of canopy critters, and climate data over time. Students learn about the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest from multiple perspectives while developing a sense of the place through their own experience.
