Background/Question/Methods

The National Invasive Species Council (NISC) was established in 1999 to see that federal agency activities concerning invasive species are coordinated, complementary, cost-efficient, and effective, relying to the extent feasible and appropriate on existing organizations. NISC operates from a high-level, whole-of-government perspective and directs the efforts of NISC staff toward convening and coordination to guide existing efforts and amplify the federal impact in the fight against invasive species. Across the 16 federal agencies and offices represented on the Council there are both 1) a considerable amount of policies and regulations related to invasive species and 2) active and exciting progress on invasive species biological and ecological science.

Results/Conclusions

The talk will focus on how coordination between federal policy and science initiatives can enhance our capacity for EDRR (early detection of and rapid response to biological invasion). Specifically, it will consider the EDRR implications for the focal areas from the NISC FY2020 Work Plan (e.g., environmental DNA, advanced biotechnologies, fire and invasive species, emergency funding).
