Monday, August 12, 2019: 11:30 AM-1:15 PM
M101/102, Kentucky International Convention Center

Effective scientist-communicators who foster dialogue and respect between science and society are essential for true public communication of and engagement with science (http://tinyurl.com/EngageESA). There are many ways in which ecologists might engage with community groups, policy makers, and other members of their communities to identify and find solutions to environmental problems. However, effective communication and engagement around science topics is typically an acquired, not innate, skill. This workshop will provide an opportunity for ecologists to practice their science communication skills and plan for meaningful public engagement. The workshop is based on the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology’s Communicating Science Workshops (https://www.aaas.org/pes/communicating-science-workshops) which have trained more than 6,000 people at universities, meetings, and government agencies worldwide since 2008. Workshop participants will be encouraged to consider their goals for engaging, define target audiences, and develop effective messages and will building their network of ecology colleagues who are interested in science communication and public engagement.

Registration Fee: $0
