Ecology is often considered an academic discipline and graduate students are often trained to follow the academic track. In reality, there are many jobs across a wide variety of fields that are open to ecologists. This workshop is ideal for graduate students and early-career researchers who are interested in learning more about career opportunities both in and outside of academia. Participants will get to hear from and interact with a diverse group of ecologists working in academia, local government, federal government, and non-government organizations as tenure-track professors, research analysts, and science education specialists.

Participants will engage in a frank and open discussion with our panelists on topics that everybody wants to know about but may not ask about such as work-life balance, vacation time, moving expenses, negotiation, salary, retirement benefits, whether a job is family-friendly, etc. Many of these topics are considered taboo and early career researchers are often (1) left in the dark about whether to pursue a particular career path, (2) unsure what their future financial situation will look like, and (3) uncertain about how their careers will affect their overall life. This workshop will give participants the opportunity to get a handle on the nitty-gritty details that often go undiscussed but are essential to determining if a job or a career is a good fit.
