Exploring careers outside of academia can be extremely rewarding and insightful, as it enables recent graduates an opportunity to experience alternative career paths and develop important professional careers. In recent years, more and more people are opting out of traditional research-based postdocs, and are exploring interdisciplinary postdocs at Science Museums, Nonprofits, Government Agencies, and in the Private Sector. Non-traditional postdocs allow recent graduates the opportunity to develop various skills such as leadership, problem-solving, event planning, and science communication, which are critical for careers in all sectors, from academia to the private sector. In addition, non-traditional postdocs expose individuals to alternative ways to use their science degrees.

During this special session, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of both, individuals who have completed/are completing non-traditional postdocs, and employers from the various agencies. Previous and current postdoc scholars will be able to discuss the benefits of non-traditional postdocs, in addition to addressing concerns students may have in pursuing one. Employers will discuss the various postdoc opportunities available within their organization.
