Working in the sciences is a fun-filled adventure for most, but like all workplaces, the sciences can be fraught with interpersonal conflict, and power differentials can create abusive situations. Though no one likes to talk about it, far too many have stories about being pushed out of classes, labs, or departments by folks with seniority who have become inappropriate in some fashion. Regardless of intent, the impacts of these situations are felt for years.

This workshop will introduce participants to rights they have in the workplace when undergoing harassment of any sort, including but not limited to sexual harassment. It will not serve as legal advice, but instead will describe the systems in place designed to protect students and employees from unfair treatment. Finally, this workshop will be a safe space for folks to share their experiences and receive support and advice from other participants.

This workshop will briefly describe existing legal protections like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (protecting employment), and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act (protecting students). It will then explain existing structures in Universities (ombudsman, title IX offices, accessibility offices) or in private organizations (HR, the EEOC) that may be able to assist in cases of harassment. Finally, we will open into a sharing session for folks to ask questions or share experiences with the group. It is our hope that this workshop will bring light to the serious issues that harassment can cause in the sciences, and prevent future incidents from occurring.
