INS 2-4 - Undergraduate field-based learning experiences: Inclusive or exclusive?

Monday, August 12, 2019

Christopher L. Atchison, School of Education and Department of Geology, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH
Regardless of the discipline, field studies place an implicit prerequisite on the physical ability needed to navigate the often rugged, ever-changing and unpredictable, natural environment. A non-issue for many, students with disabilities also face bias and stereotype pursuing science disciplines with field requirements. This marginalization is driven by traditionally rigid field practice and a social perception of individual deficit: the physical inabilities of the student rather than an issue in how field studies are presented. This presentation will demonstrate that intelligence is not physical or sensory ability dependent, and full participation does not require physical access to all field sites.
