The DOE National Laboratories and the science we conduct often blend and bend the cultures and objectives typical of academia, government or industry research. Research priorities and funding are driven by agency-specific mission areas, but within this we mostly conduct fundamental science and our primary “product” is often peer reviewed publications; however more applied research and development is also common. I will briefly discuss the typical flavors of scientific careers in the national labs, drawing mostly on my 15 year experience and informal observations.
