Each spring I travel with ~20 undergraduates across the Sierra Nevada to draw and study features of ecological, geological, and environmental interest. As the naturalist John Muir Laws has observed, drawing is a process of paying attention—the “same process by which we fall in love.” Drawing enables us to practice deep observation and attentiveness that spark scientific curiosity and inspire care for the natural world.
