- What makes a good or bad quote?
- What does it mean to speak “off the record?”
- What do journalists look for in a good science story?
Participants will also discuss topics ranging from journalistic integrity norms and policies on article review prior to publication to the importance of deadlines and the timelines associated with different types of journalism (e.g. radio, daily news, or feature magazines). Representatives from the ESA press office will explain what a press office does, what the difference is between a press officer and a journalist, how to partner with ESA’s Public Affairs staff, and how to take advantage of the press room at annual meetings.
The workshop, coordinated by the Communication & Engagement Section, the Student Section, and the ESA Public Affairs Office, will consist of a panel comprised of journalists, press officers, and ecologists with media experience, followed by a series of activities in small groups facilitated by the panelists and others with science communication expertise.
