In an era of increasingly politicized science, journalists and ecologists need each other. However, the potential for misunderstanding is high, with ecologists and journalists facing different professional and ethical constraints, timelines, and workflows. In this workshop, the focus will be on working toward a mutually productive interview experience. Discussion questions will include:

Participants will also discuss topics ranging from journalistic integrity norms and policies on article review prior to publication to the importance of deadlines and the timelines associated with different types of journalism (e.g. radio, daily news, or feature magazines). Representatives from the ESA press office will explain what a press office does, what the difference is between a press officer and a journalist, how to partner with ESA’s Public Affairs staff, and how to take advantage of the press room at annual meetings.

The workshop, coordinated by the Communication & Engagement Section, the Student Section, and the ESA Public Affairs Office, will consist of a panel comprised of journalists, press officers, and ecologists with media experience, followed by a series of activities in small groups facilitated by the panelists and others with science communication expertise.
