Nearly 4 out of every 5 Americans are on Facebook, about 1 in 4 Americans are on Twitter, and the majority of people on these platforms get at least some of their news there. The potential for scientists to engage with the public via social media is strong. Yet few scientists get the training they need to effectively communicate about and engage the public with science. This introductory workshop for ecologists covers the latest research on social media use, why and how scientists should engage on social media, common platforms, and basic best practices. The workshop is based on the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology’s Communicating Science Workshops (https://www.aaas.org/pes/communicating-science-workshops) which have trained more than 5,000 people at universities, meetings, and government agencies worldwide since 2008. Workshop participants will be encouraged to think about their goals for engaging on social media, their social media identities, and best practices for identifying and effectively interacting with online audiences while also building their network of ecology colleagues who are interested in science communication and public engagement. The workshop will focus on Twitter but is applicable to a variety of social media platforms.
