FT 7 - Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation's Service Learning Day at Bayou St. John Urban Marsh

Tuesday, August 7, 2018: 9:00 AM-1:15 PM
Lobby E, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center
Trip Leader:
Joann S. Haydel
The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation(LPBF) is a nonprofit, membership-based organization established in 1989 in response to public outcry for the preservation and restoration of the Pontchartrain Basin. LPBF created an urban marsh at the mouth of Bayou St. John to help maintain the water quality of the bayou. It is a living classroom and a laboratory for restoration, and puts regional problems in a local perspective: the half-acre marsh is the area lost every half hour in south Louisiana. The marsh also serves as a filter for pollution that enters the lake from the city of New Orleans. Guests will participate in a service learning project by cleaning up litter at the urban marsh at the mouth of Bayou St. John, where the bayou meets Lake Pontchartrain. Participants will also learn about the bayou and its importance to the city of New Orleans. Afterwards, guests will travel to the New Canal Lighthouse Museum to learn about the history of the lakefront area, how LPBF saved our lake, and what is being done to save Louisiana's disappearing coast.

Registration Fee: $55

Equipment and Attire: Old tennis shoes or shoes that can get wet or dirty Sun screen/bug spray To access the marsh, participants will have to walk over the levee.
