Fostered by national reports such as Vision and Change, changes in the way colleges and universities are approaching their undergraduate STEM courses can be observed nationwide. Change has come in the form of initiatives dedicated to advancing evidence-based science education practices, research-based undergraduate courses, and other efforts that aim to provide educators with the tools and strategies needed to transform their classrooms.

One stumbling block in the process of this transformation is the time and energy commitment needed to produce evidence-based student-centered teaching materials. In response to this need, and recommended in the Vision and Change report, a peer-reviewed, open access journal of student-centered life science education resources was created: CourseSource.

CourseSource (http://www.coursesource.org) provides life science educators with tested, evidence-based activities that make difficult concepts accessible to undergraduates. CourseSource includes teaching materials that  1) incorporate student-centered, evidence-based pedagogy; 2) are aligned with  professional society-developed learning goals including those developed by the Ecological Society of America; and 3) are organized and formatted so that use in other classrooms can easily occur.

CourseSource also provides authors with the opportunity to publish teaching materials in a high-quality, peer-reviewed format that documents their scholarly teaching efforts, accomplishments, and innovations. This workshop will help prospective CourseSource authors write up their work for publication and include information on how to present instructional activities so that journal readers can replicate them.
