“Structure” encompasses a broad array of physical and biological attributes that control ecosystem functional dynamics, and is measured across highly variable spatial and temporal scales. How should we conceptualize structure in a meaningful way for use in ecosystem models? Here, we examine recent findings in forested ecosystems and explore the potential for novel structure-function model syntheses.
