Communication with the public has become an increasingly important part of the scientific process. It is not enough to develop and execute studies, one must share research findings in engaging, memorable, and scientifically accurate ways. Science communication (SciComm) presents both challenges and opportunities for scientists at all career stages. Here, I focus on the opportunities that SciComm offers, including to collaborate across scales and disciplines, to highlight diversity, and to encourage a more holistic view of ecological processes. I also address challenges of doing SciComm, with an emphasis on best practices, case studies, and actionable items.
