Riparian ecosystems play disproportionately large roles in regulating landscape function and harboring biodiversity. This is especially true in deserts, where riparian zones are not only of great importance, but are also experiencing rapid, large-scale changes due to exotic plant invasion and, also, due to biocontrol of plant invasion. Here we will talk about changes experienced by southwestern U.S. riparian zones – focusing on tamarisk invasion and the tamarisk biocontrol beetle – and will highlight contemporary challenges and opportunities to understanding and managing these critical habitats.
