Riparian and wetland systems are vital hotspots of biodiversity in the vast and parched landscape of the Southwest. Human development pressure and climate change continue to stress these habitats by increasing the rate and magnitude of species invasions, altering fire regimes, and reducing water quantity and quality. Can these systems be saved? Can we recreate what has already been lost? And, are we headed toward a world of intensive and perpetual ecosystem management?
