Ecologists produce science that is critical for understanding and solving environmental problems. But these scientific results are not always understood by the public or translated effectively for decision-makers to assess the consequences of different actions. Thus, it is more important than ever to reach beyond our universities and institutions to work with the public and decision-makers to identify and develop solutions commensurate to the challenge. This session is designed to build upon the dialogue started through a Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment editorial entitled “Engagement 2.0: increasing our collective impact”. The speakers will provide actionable advice and examples of how ESA members can #EngageESA – from members just getting started in public engagement to transformational institutional change. We will focus especially on how we can empower and enable a greater number of scientists to effectively engage with the public, and how we can increase the impact of the public engagement work that we do. Several talks will address breaking through identity and other barriers that currently divide the US.
