What does it mean to engage the public? Why would scientists want to move out of the lab and into the whirlpool of civic debate? Many of the major issues facing society today have science and technology at their core, but science is only one element of the discussion and decision making process. Public engagement challenges scientists to partake in intentional, meaningful dialogue that provides opportunities for mutual learning between scientists and members of the public.
