There are billions of trees in cities around the world. These trees can be planted outside their natural climate ranges, but how far outside? Comparing global natural and cultivated range climate niche data for n=219 urban tree species shows that temperature drives the distribution of urban trees, the breadth of natural and cultivated temperature niches are similar, but niches are shifted away from temperature extremes. Applying this knowledge to a particular urban forest shows that most of the 375 tree species cultivated by the City of Melbourne, Australia are vulnerable to increasing temperatures due to urban heat and climate change.
