The 2007 ESA/SER meeting convenes within the ancestral homelands of the Ohlone people, closely bordered by Coast Miwok, Pomo, Wappo, and Salinan people. The low coastal hills and valleys were rich in tule and redwoods, as well as oak, elk, and deer; bays and estuaries provided an abundance of mussels and abalone, seals, sea otters, and sea lions. Dozens of languages were spoken by the cultures in this region; the cultural complexity mirrored the complex landscape of lush valleys and grassy uplands, rugged coastlines, and mountainous interior. This year we are privileged to host representatives from Ohlone, Coast Miwok, and Kashaya Pomo cultures. These include famed basket weavers with an intimate knowledge of local landscapes, as well as highly respected community leaders. Presenters will share their multi-faceted understanding of the region from the perspective of people shaped by landscape, and discuss critical restoration needs for maintaining cultural and biological diversity of the region.
