Event Description: Our planet is facing a climate crisis. Following a disappointing COP26 and an alarming recent IPCCF report, it is now more obvious than ever that current measures are insufficient. New digital opportunities are constantly emerging as potential and efficient tools to tackle this crisis; however, our young scientists are seldom trained in using such tools to answer their research questions. Moreover, researchers rarely apply their findings to the public sphere to push for significant community and political changes. In collaboration with the Sustainability in the Digital Age initiative of the Canadian hub of Future Earth, we launched the NSERC CREATE Leadership in Environmental and Digital innovation for Sustainability (LEADS) program in 2020. We aim at training graduate students and postdocs to become the leaders of tomorrow by leveraging the potential of the digital revolution, and thus create a sustainable planet for future generations. Funding is made available to trainees in one of the four Montreal universities whose research aligns with such goals, including work on ecology. Training is provided in different forms (e.g. summer schools, internships, speaker series) and on different topics such as machine learning, leadership, policy-making, and science communication. Come meet the program coordinator, professors in the program looking for students and postdocs, and our current and past cohort of trainees. All of our recent graduates have obtained influential jobs in the field of sustainability (e.g. university professor, natural resources professional for the World Bank, coordinator of projects related to the circular economy or green initiatives in SMEs).Group Name: National Research Council of Canada Collaborative Research and Training Experience program in Leadership in Environmental and Digital innovation for Sustainability (NSERC CREATE LEADS)
