Session Description: This workshop will help educators envision how urban agriculture can engage biology students through course modules and curricular-based research experiences. Participants will learn about a new network - Training Undergraduate Biologists through urban Agriculture (TUBA) supported by a NSF Research Coordination Network grant. This network brings together diverse educator and community expertise with the aim of creating multiple structures to enhance educational, professional development, and community outcomes. Urban agriculture is ideal for advancing undergraduate biology education. The topic is at the intersection of two global challenges that resonate with students: the impact of urbanization and the pressing demands for a more sustainable agriculture. Urban agriculture sites, including campus gardens, vacant lots, and community farms, make it practical to design iterative field research experiences for students. In addition, urban agriculture provides new ways for biology educators to connect experiences to pressing community challenges including food insecurity, economic disparities, and the degradation of urban nature. There are three main objectives for this workshop. First, we will make the case for incorporating urban agriculture into undergraduate biology education by showing how it can facilitate field and community engagement experiences. Second, we will describe examples of how urban agriculture has been incorporated into curricula through on-campus activities and collaborations with community organizations. Finally, the majority of the workshop will be organized around small group activities aimed at outlining urban agriculture-related modules for biology courses, and for catalyzing new research collaborations focused on the ecology of urban agriculture.
