Session Description: Careers in science policy are exciting and rewarding. But how does an ecologist get on a path towards a career informing policy? In this special session, come hear from individuals who have successfully navigated those first, crucial steps and are now working in science policy or other applied science fields. Each speaker will talk about serving in one of the premier science policy fellowships in the country and/or winning an early-career award acknowledging their science policy work as students. These fellowships and awards represent some of the best opportunities to learn firsthand what it means to influence decision-making with science. These opportunities put scientists in contact with a range of policy makers (e.g., executive vs. legislative branches of government). They also connect individuals to create a network of motivated, passionate people with a common goal of making science a keystone for development of good policy. A panel discussion will provide plenty of time for interaction with the audience.
