Session Description: Member-led sections and chapters in ESA have done incredible work in the realm of human dimensions as it relates to ecology. To recognize these efforts, six editors created the Human Dimensions Series in the ESA Bulletin in 2019 to highlight two veins of effort within the ESA member-lead sections: (1) research focused at the nexus of human and natural systems, including community engagement in research, and (2) work done to raise awareness of and seek solutions to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within ecology and across the ESA. This Special Session focuses on the content shared in the Human Dimensions series regarding volunteer/member derived efforts in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (the second vein) from the Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Black Ecologists, Inclusive Ecology, Human Ecology, Environmental Justice Sections and the Latin American and the Caribbean Chapter (all contributors to the series). Panelists from each of the five sections and one chapter will participate on a moderated panel for questions related to DEIJ efforts within ESA, with a focus on the theme of the 2022 meeting: A Change is Gonna Come. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from the panel about current DEIJ efforts and their vision for the future of ESA and the field of ecology. This includes addressing barriers to inclusivity such as volunteer leadership, scientific colonialism, racism, and sexism. Key issues and opportunities identified by the panelists will help guide ESA Diversity Committee priorities and actions for the 2022-2023 year.
