Targets, monitoring and science in the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Background/Question/Methods

The world is at the precipice of irreversible biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse at a scale not seen before. Governments have realized the importance of addressing the biodiversity crisis through developing a global biodiversity framework to address the problem at the local, national, regional and global level, including actions related to direct and indirect drivers. In the context of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, improved monitoring and biodiversity data to guide action is critical to guide action and to the success of the framework. An official monitoring framework will be agreed by countries as part of the global biodiversity framework. This monitoring framework will include a set of headline indicators which are meant to serves as a minimum set of high-level indicators for capturing the overall scope of the goals and targets of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and which will be integrated in the national reporting processes. Moving towards improved national monitoring of biodiversity will require strengthening national monitoring systems and improved collaboration, particularly between national and global environmental monitoring experts, environmental policy experts, statistical offices and geospatial entities. This session will discuss the opperationalization of the monitoring framework for the global biodiveristy framework.
