The NASA-led hyperspectral imaging and thermal infrared satellite mission, ‘Surface Biology and Geology’ (SBG), expected to launch in 2027, will allow ecologists and earth scientists to monitor a host of key terrestrial and coastal ecosystem properties across space and time. Together with numerous other upcoming missions and sensors currently installed on the International Space Station there will be many opportunities for diverse, near real-time global spectroscopic remote sensing. In this introductory talk we will describe in more detail some of these missions and their current status and pose questions to the group (presenters and audience) about what they would like to see for the future of ecological remote sensing.We hope that this discussion leads to more involvement of the ecological community in the development of SBG.
