The field of "western" Ecology can be traced back to the time when Darwin embarked on research expeditions to the “New World”. The legacy of his work is foundational to ecology and legitimized a colonial approach to conducting ecological research that nowadays is still evident. Recently, academics from institutions in the Global North have been reflecting on how to decolonize ecology to create truly inclusive research communities. I will discuss some aspects essential to decolonizing ecology to expand our perspective, be truly inclusive, and conduct socially just, non-colonial ecological research.
