Ample data document that soil microbial communities respond to global change drivers in ways that influence ecosystem function. To date, research has focused on ecological mechanisms, with comparatively little research documenting evolutionary responses to global change. Global change experiments offer a unique opportunity to investigate evolutionary responses in the field, but their potential remains largely unexploited. Although not originally designed as artificial selection experiments, long-term global change treatments can act as novel selective pressures on soil microorganisms. This talk will highlight the potential of using existing long-term manipulative field experiments to document microbial evolution, with specific examples provided.
