Artificial habitats can be effective components of wildlife restoration projects by providing space for multiple taxa to reproduce and rest. For seabirds that nest in cavities or underground, artificial nests are a common tool used in conservation efforts. However, elevated temperatures in artificial nests can cause lethal hyperthermia in adult birds and chicks. Given the paradox between artificial nests both creating habitat and presenting a hazard, we can re-design nests to be safe in a warming world. With climate-resilient materials and designs, customized ceramic nests are a durable and safe solution to protect multiple seabirds from anticipated climate stressors.
