Building research community in ecosystem science: Narrative report of an uncontrolled experiment

The vital connections theme for this year’s meeting motivates reflection on the development of The Center for Ecosystem Science and Society at Northern Arizona University. Vital connections in the science of ecology can develop from focus beyond the science of ecology, indeed focus beyond science, especially beyond the culture of science. I will share some examples about productive collaboration within Ecoss between our science and the visual arts, as well as writing and film. Building vital connections ecology, or in any field, or in any human endeavor, is as challenging as it is perfectly natural.
