Join the Communication and Engagement, Policy, and Inclusive Ecology sections for a continued discussion on cultivating a culture of community engagement at ESA annual meetings and beyond. In 2019 we hosted a working group with the goal of discussing ways to sustain, support, and institutionalize community engagement activities associated with ESA annual meetings. Subsequently, a Public Engagement Subcommittee was established within the ESA Meetings Committee. During this special session we will broaden the conversation to explore how engagement at the annual meetings can support engagement year-round. We will share feedback from the 2019 annual meeting and identify points of alignment with ongoing engagement activities (Extending the Tent, Earth Stewardship Initiative, Cross-town Walk, etc.). We will also identify opportunities to strengthen engagement activities around ESA annual meetings and increase ESA membership and community participation in such activities. We encourage broad participation, which will include leaders of current and past engagement initiatives within ESA. Potential products from the session may include: 1) a summary of action items/recommendations to the ESA Council, 2) recommendations to the ESA Meetings Committee and Public Engagement Subcommittee, 3) list of talking points/topics for ESA meeting organizers when talking with representatives of host cities and/or, 4) published reflection piece for submission to Ecotone or the ESA Bulletin.
