Whether your dream job is a traditional faculty position, a science educator, a research scientist, or a conservation biologist, you will need a track record of peer-reviewed publications to be successful. This session will provide students with resources and concrete advice to improve their chances of getting their manuscripts accepted for publication. The session is led by two senior editors of ESA journals (Ecology and Ecological Monographs). The session will be divided into 3 parts: 1) an overview of the process of manuscript submission, pre-evaluation, review, and acceptance at Ecology and Ecological Monographs; 2) specific advice on how to increase the chances of manuscript acceptance. We will offer tips on preparing manuscript abstracts, writing cover letters, formatting manuscripts, using citations correctly, avoiding jargon, and creating compelling graphics. We will also discuss how to deal with manuscript rejections, revisions, editor suggestions, and reviews; 3) open discussion for answering specific questions and discussing general strategies for preparing and submitting manuscripts. Both presenters will also be available during the rest of the week for appointments to meet with students who want individual consultations.
