Coming out as a nonbinary transgender person midway through my PhD program has presented a variety of challenges, not the least of which has been navigating the highly dimorphic depiction of sex categories in the Organismic Biology curricula I was assigned to teach. Through searching for a less binary alternative, I’ve become a passionate advocate for inclusive biology education, research, and science communication. As an evolutionary biologist, I feel more deeply connected to the vast biological diversity of life on earth as someone who, like so many of my fellow organisms, is neither, other, and both male and female.
