COS 215 Abstract - Hydroshare: Engaging aquatic scientists to advance a community data repository

Julia Masterman and Jerard Bales, Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc., Cambridge, MA
Background/Question/Methods

The ability to effectively gather, discover, and disseminate research data that is derived from a variety of sources is imperative for scientific innovation in aquatic science. This requires continued investment in state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure (CI) to facilitate scientific advancements with a focus on scientific use cases at multiple professional, institutional, and geographic levels. As research studies grow in scope and complexity it becomes increasingly difficult to develop and maintain these services to meet the needs of aquatic science researchers while also keeping pace with growing infrastructure needs. The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI) addresses this challenge by developing programs and services aimed to strengthen collaboration within the aquatic science community.

Results/Conclusions

CUAHSI’s HydroShare is an online collaborative data repository for sharing and publishing water science data and models. The primary goal of this system is to make aquatic science information available in a citable, shareable, and discoverable manner so the breadth of available water science information is increased. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to orient design and development efforts around real-world science use cases. We will discuss how HydroShare has been implemented to support several different use-cases that vary in scale and scientific focus from the individual researcher level, to organizational-level teamwork, to international collaboration. These use cases feature topics on data publishing, supporting the data lifecycle, data management, data recovery and migration, and data hosting. This presentation highlights a subset of the many ways that CUAHSI supports aquatic science research and management world-wide and presents a vision for the future of HydroShare.
