This talk will focus on best practices for building and sustaining long-term relationships between researchers and community with a focus on the perspectives of Native Hawaiian communities. These best practices, called the Kūlana Noiʻi (Research Standards), were developed and piloted over the course of a year-long collaborative project led by Hawaiʻi Sea Grant, Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo, and Paepae o Heʻeia. The talk will highlight lessons learned from the effort to develop the best practices outlined in the Kūlana Noiʻi, adapt those practices for place-based implementation, and institutionalize the Kūlana Noiʻi in the University of Hawaii System.
